New offices prepare for global warming, the green way!

A new government report analysing our urban treescapes, Trees in Towns II, confirms there has been a “... big reduction in the percentages of trees in the youngest age bands...” compared to the 1992 survey, and that “This reduction in new planting, and the threat to older trees in urban areas, have resulted in an unsatisfactory age structure – an issue that needs to be urgently addressed.”
With the impact of global warming beginning to bite, top UK tree consultant Jeremy Barrell, believes that falling tree planting is not the only problem we have to face. “Big trees are being lost from our towns and cities at an alarming rate, with painful consequences for our future comfort”, he observes. “Trees play an essential role in keeping urban temperatures down and, with predicted city rises of 4–7°C over the next 30 years, a future with less trees is going to be hot indeed.” In this context, it is not surprising that the government report recommends that councils “develop and implement a comprehensive tree strategy.”
Barrell points to recent research by the University of Manchester, which suggests that a mere 10% increase in urban canopy cover may be enough to cancel out these dramatic temperature rises. But, he cautions: “There is some urgency about this; to reap the temperature buffering benefits that only big trees can provide, we must be planting them now so they are big enough when we will need them most. Small trees when the heat is here will be too little, too late!”
Having just moved to new offices at Fordingbridge Industrial Estate, this go-ahead tree consultancy decided that leading by example was the best way to climate-proof their offices, the natural way. They have just planted six 8m tall semi-mature trees that will provide shade in the summer and shelter in the winter, as well as making the place look greener. Barrell explains: “We have 18 staff and we want them to be comfortable in the long term. We are proud of our new offices and these trees make a bold statement about our commitment to doing our bit to buffer climate change. Just as importantly, the clearly reflect our commitment to quality and the calibre of our services when clients visit for meetings.”
Nicola Brennan of letting agents, London Clancy commented “We did have to use our powers of persuasion to get Barrell Tree Care to take a look at the offices at Fordingbridge. They were adamant that Fordingbridge would be too far for staff to travel to each day and were initially looking at a property we were instructed on in Ringwood. Having got a feel for their requirements, I knew that the Fordingbridge offices would be perfect for their business and a very pleasant environment for their staff to work in, which has been the case since they took up occupation last spring.
The scheme comprises four new high quality office premises, two of which have now been let. The remaining two units (Units C & D) comprise approximately 2,100 sq ft each and could be interconnected if required to make one unit of approximately 4,200 sq ft. The building comprises first and second floor offices with good sized archiving/storage space in the roof. The specification includes twin cassette air conditioning to the ground and first floors, suspended ceilings throughout the office, stairs, and reception areas, recessed Category II lighting to office and circulation areas, double glazed windows with solar protection to glass, male and female WC’s in each unit.
These high quality offices are available to rent from £11 per sq ft (based on the office areas), which is very competitive given the market rental in the Ringwood area is about £16.50 per sq ft for secondhand units”
Not only will these new 8m trees look good in this quality office environment, they will help buffer the predicted temperature rises during the next 30 years for the staff who have to work here.
